Description
Haplogroup N1a1 (L1026) is the primary subclade of N1a, encompassing virtually all the major N lineages found in Northern Europe and Western Siberia. Defined by the L1026 marker, it contains the large Uralic clade N1a1a (Z1936) that is characteristic of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples, and represents the westward expansion of haplogroup N from Central Siberia toward the Ural Mountains and eventually the Baltic.
Interesting Fact
N1a1 (L1026) is the gateway haplogroup between the deep Asian origins of N and its modern dominance in Northern Europe — its carriers followed the retreating glaciers northward and westward after the Last Glacial Maximum, eventually becoming the paternal ancestors of populations from the Urals to Scandinavia.
