Description

Haplogroup V1 is a subclade of V, itself one of the most characteristic Western European Paleolithic maternal lineages. V1 has a distribution similar to its parent V, found primarily in the Iberian Peninsula, France, and the British Isles, with some presence in Scandinavia. It represents one of the sub-branches of V that diversified after the post-glacial re-expansion from the Franco-Cantabrian refugium. V1 is rare overall but found at slightly elevated frequencies in the same Atlantic-facing populations where V is concentrated.

Interesting Fact

V and its subclades including V1 have a complementary distribution with H in Europe — both are descended from HV, but H expanded strongly northward and eastward while V remained concentrated in the western periphery (Iberia, Basque Country, Sardinia) and leapt to Scandinavia where it reached extremely high frequencies in the Saami. This complementary distribution reflects the complex post-glacial recolonization of Europe from multiple refugia.
