Description

Haplogroup U1 is a subclade of U found primarily in South Asia, the Near East, and parts of East Africa. It is relatively rare in Europe. U1 is one of the oldest surviving lineages within the U clade, with an estimated origin in the Near East or South Asia during the Upper Paleolithic. Its distribution spans from the Indian subcontinent through Iran to East Africa, suggesting ancient population connections across this vast region that predate historical records.

Interesting Fact

U1 and its subclades have been found among Sri Lankan populations at elevated frequencies, and its presence in Ethiopia and Somalia at around 5% suggests ancient maternal connections between South Asia, the Near East, and the Horn of Africa that may reflect pre-Holocene population movements along the 'Southern Route' out of Africa.
