Description
Haplogroup U4a is a subclade of U4 found predominantly in populations of the Ural region, Eastern Europe, and Siberia. It is particularly associated with Uralic-speaking peoples such as the Khanty, Mansi, Mari, and Udmurt of Russia. U4a has been proposed as a maternal marker of the ancient Uralic-speaking populations of the Ural region, and its presence in modern Finno-Ugric populations suggests a Mesolithic or early Neolithic origin in the forest-steppe zone of Eurasia. U4a represents one of the ancient maternal lineages that persisted in Eastern Europe and Siberia despite the multiple population expansions that affected the region.
Interesting Fact
U4 and its subclades including U4a are found at elevated frequencies among the Khanty and Mansi of western Siberia (the Ob-Ugric peoples), who speak languages most closely related to Hungarian — making U4a a potential mtDNA marker connecting the Western Siberian Uralic homeland to the modern Hungarian population, whose ancestors migrated from the Ural region to the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century CE.
