Description
Haplogroup R1a1 (SRY10831.2, also known as M516) is the principal and almost universal subclade of R1a. Virtually all modern R1a men belong to R1a1, making it functionally synonymous with R1a in most contexts. The rare individuals in R1a* (xR1a1) are found at extremely low frequencies, making R1a1 the node that defines the overwhelming bulk of R1a's global diversity. R1a1 is the common ancestor of the major R1a branches that spread across Eurasia during the Bronze Age Indo-European expansions.
Interesting Fact
R1a1 (SRY10831.2) is so nearly universal within R1a that finding an R1a*(xR1a1) individual is an extremely rare event — the vast majority of R1a's ~300 million carriers worldwide belong to R1a1, making this essentially the 'gateway' node into all the known R1a diversity.
