Description

Mitochondrial haplogroup M7b is a widespread East and Southeast Asian branch of M7, distributed across southern China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Unlike the Japan-specific M7a, M7b has a broader geographic range and is found at 2–8% frequencies across Han Chinese populations of southern China, Vietnamese, Thai, and other Southeast Asian groups. M7b reflects an ancient southward expansion of populations along the East Asian coast and into Southeast Asia during the late Paleolithic and early Holocene. It is one of several M-derived haplogroups that testify to the deep roots of coastal Asian populations.

Interesting Fact

While M7a remained largely confined to the Japanese archipelago, M7b spread widely across the East and Southeast Asian coastlines, carried by the same ancestral coastal migration that ultimately contributed maternal lineages to populations as far afield as Taiwan, the Philippines, and mainland Southeast Asia.
