Description

Mitochondrial haplogroup M7a is a Japan-specific subclade of M7 that represents one of the primary Jōmon-derived maternal lineages in modern Japanese people. Found at frequencies of 8–15% in the Japanese population, M7a is substantially more common in the Japanese than in other East Asian populations, reflecting its origins among the ancient Jōmon hunter-gatherers who inhabited the Japanese archipelago for tens of thousands of years before the Yayoi agricultural expansion from the Korean peninsula approximately 3,000 years ago. M7a's distinctly Japanese distribution pattern is a key marker of Jōmon genetic heritage in the modern Japanese population.

Haplogroup M7a is so strongly associated with Jōmon ancestry that geneticists use it as one of the primary markers to estimate the Jōmon versus Yayoi genetic contributions in modern Japanese people. Ancient DNA from Jōmon burial sites has confirmed the presence of M7a thousands of years before agriculture arrived in Japan.
