Description
Haplogroup K1a4 is one of the major subclades of K1a, itself the most common K subclade. K1a4 includes K1a4a1, which is one of the four major founding mtDNA haplogroups of the Ashkenazi Jewish population. K1a4a1 is carried by approximately 10–12% of Ashkenazi Jewish women and represents one of the most dramatic genetic founder effects ever documented in a modern human population. K1a4 is found broadly in the Near East and at lower frequencies across Europe.
Interesting Fact
K1a4a1, the most notable K1a4 subclade, shows a remarkable star-shaped phylogeny consistent with rapid exponential population growth from a very small founding group — estimated at fewer than 10 women — who lived approximately 1,000–2,000 years ago in the Near East before the Ashkenazi communities were established in medieval Europe. Together with K1a1b1a and K1a9, these K lineages account for nearly 30% of all Ashkenazi maternal DNA.
