Description
Haplogroup J2b (M102) is a major subclade of J2 found primarily in the Balkans, South Asia, and the Near East. It reaches its highest modern frequencies in the Balkans (especially Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo) and in South Asia (Pakistan, India). Unlike J2a which is predominantly Mediterranean and Near Eastern, J2b has a strongly bimodal distribution — common in both the Balkans and South Asia while relatively rare in the Near East between these regions. This unusual pattern may reflect ancient population movements from the Near East into both directions during the Neolithic or Bronze Age.
Interesting Fact
J2b is particularly common among Albanian-speaking populations (15–25%), where it is one of the most frequent haplogroups. The high frequency of J2b in both Albanians and South Asian Brahmin populations has led to speculation about shared ancient origins, though the connection remains debated — it may reflect parallel Neolithic or Bronze Age expansions from the same Near Eastern source population.
