Description

Haplogroup H4 is a minor subclade of H found at low frequencies across Europe and the Near East. It is most notable for its presence in the Basque Country and among populations of the Caucasus, suggesting it may represent an ancient pre-Neolithic lineage. H4 is rare but widely distributed, and its deep divergence from other H subclades hints at a Glacial Refugium origin, possibly in the Caucasus or Anatolia during the Last Glacial Maximum.

Interesting Fact

H4 has been detected in ancient DNA samples from Neolithic and Chalcolithic sites in Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, suggesting it was part of the founding maternal lineages of early European farmers.
