Description

Haplogroup H1b is a subclade of H1 with a distribution shifted towards Eastern Europe and the Eurasian Steppe compared to other H1 subclades. It is found in populations of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and the Baltic region. H1b has been identified in ancient DNA from Bronze Age Steppe populations (Yamnaya culture), suggesting it was part of the maternal lineage pool of steppe pastoralists who later expanded westward into Europe during the Early Bronze Age.

Interesting Fact

H1b was found in ancient remains from the Yamnaya culture (3300–2600 BCE), the Steppe pastoralist population widely credited with spreading Indo-European languages into Europe. This makes H1b a potential mtDNA marker for the Indo-European ancestral population.
