Description

Haplogroup H1 (M69) is the dominant subclade of Y-DNA haplogroup H and the defining paternal lineage of many Dravidian-speaking populations of South India. H1 is found at its highest frequencies among South Indian tribal and lower-caste communities, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam speakers, and among the Romani (Roma) people of Europe — who carry H1 as a relic of their South Asian origin. H1 is one of the oldest Y-DNA lineages in South Asia and may represent the paternal inheritance of the ancient Dravidian-speaking populations who inhabited the Indian subcontinent before the arrival of Indo-Aryan speakers approximately 3,500 years ago.

Interesting Fact

The Roma (Romani) people of Europe carry H1 at frequencies of 30–40%, making it their most common Y-DNA haplogroup — far higher than in any European population. This haplogroup, combined with specific mtDNA lineages, provides definitive genetic proof of the Roma's South Asian origin, tracing their ultimate homeland to northwestern India (likely Rajasthan or Punjab) approximately 1,000–1,500 years ago.
