Description

Haplogroup G2 is the more common of the two main G subclades, found prominently in Japan, Korea, China, and Tibetan populations. G2a is particularly associated with Japan, where it is found at frequencies of ~5–8% and has been linked to the ancient Jomon population — the pre-agricultural indigenous inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago. G2 subclades are also found at elevated frequencies in Tibetan highlanders, suggesting possible ancient adaptations to high-altitude environments. In Korea and China, G2 is present at moderate frequencies of 3–5%.

Interesting Fact

G2 (specifically G2a) has been detected in ancient Jomon skeletal remains from Japan dating back more than 10,000 years, confirming that this haplogroup was present in the archipelago before the Yayoi migrants arrived from mainland Asia approximately 3,000 years ago. Modern Japanese populations show a mixture of G2 (Jomon-associated) and D4 (Yayoi-associated) lineages, allowing researchers to estimate the relative contributions of each ancestral population to modern Japanese maternal heritage.
